INDIAN RAILWAYS
Invention of steam engine by Sir James Watt.
1.7 million employees. 115,000 km. Track length. Over 9 billion annually passengers. 13/04/1853 Thane to Bombay under lord Dalhousie. Nationalized in 1951. Limited international services to Bang, pak and Nepal.

The communication systems used are outdated. Slow rate of upgradation. Manual signalling causes slowness and more accidents. Poor maintenance of wagons.
Railways electrification providers electrical energy to trains so that they can operate without having the need of on-board prime movers. Prime movers are the source of power for propulsion. It describes the internal combustion engine which converts fuel to work. In India CORE, Allahabad does this job. First we had 1500 V dc line. Then 3000 V dc line. Now 25kV ac line is used as per European standards and their consultation.
The semaphore signalling system is replaced by a colour light signalling system. Semaphore used to signal by changing the inclination about the pivoted arm. Interlocking (arrangement of signal apparatus to prevent conflicting movements by arranging tracks)is being upgraded.
DMRC uses cab signalling with a centralized automatic train control system. 380MHz system from Motorola is used to carry both voice and data on all lines. Cab signalling conveys track status to the crew or driver where they can see this continuously.

Major problems faced by railways:
- Outdated tracks and infra structure leading to avoidable accidents. Electrification is required. Speeds are slow compared to foreign railways.
- Technology is obsolete. For example we still use semaphore signalling. And rate of up gradation is slow.
- Low capacity utilization and rising costs.
- Lack of proper safety measures and are easy targets of naxalites and terrorists.
